The Gifts That Connect

I adore Christmas; the lights, the decorations, the trees, and the food. All of it. Gift giving can be daunting, as I think through my list this year I'm reflecting on my favorite gifts and why they continue to be special and connect me to my people.

Antique glasses from my Grandma are favorites for the holiday. We have a set of whiskey glasses with Phish members etched in the glass, a gift from friends at Seer Interactive. This is more than glassware, it's festivity that I associate with the gift givers.
My kids have always been great gift givers. Some of my favorites include a Japanese Graphite Pencil my son gifted me that was the brand used by one of the artists who crafted illustrations for the Snow White film. Our shared love of Williams Shakespeare shows up in everything from the bobble head that sits on my desk, to the Christmas ornament he got for me when we visited The Globe in London.

My daughter made me a necklace out of sea shells, flowers, and kelp from an ocean trip. That gift was a product of her skill and of our shared love of the ocean.

It is true that one of our favorite words is our own name. One holiday, we exchanged gifts at work and my friend, Michelle, made these lovely, hand-painted discs with my name on it. I treasure it and think of her whether I'm using it to hold soap or jewelery.

As we wrap up a year of realities that are difficult to process; the political landscape, the swift and uncertain changes due to AI, and the upending of economic consistency, I am more grateful than ever for the wonderful, thoughtful gifts I've received over the years. It reminds me that gifts are more than something we wrap or check off of a list, it's how we show others and how they show us we care for and see each other. Happy holidays!
